Portugal's winning goals
With a goal in stoppage time, the Portuguese team came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the first round of Group F. After a goalless first half, the Czechs opened the scoring with a stunning goal by Provod in the 61st minute. Seven minutes later, Portugal equalized with an own goal. The comeback was completed in the final moments by Francisco Conceição.
The first half of Portugal vs. Czech Republic can be summed up in three words: attack versus defense. Unable to get out of their own half with simple passing, the Czech team accepted a defensive role and held back for the first 45 minutes. Meanwhile, the Portuguese side forced numerous crosses to try to find Cristiano Ronaldo. One of the best chances of the game came from the star himself. CR7 received a low pass inside the box, turned, and shot, forcing a great save from Stanek. The goalkeeper was one of the highlights of the first half.
The second half, full of goals, was very different from the first. The Czech Republic loosened up a bit and ventured forward more often. In one of these plays, Provod struck a first-time shot from the edge of the box to open the scoring in the 61st minute. Shortly after, the goalkeeper poorly parried a header from Nuno Mendes, and the ball bounced off Hranác's shin into his own net. The Portuguese pressure increased, but the winning goal only came in stoppage time. At 90+1', Francisco Conceição capitalized on Hranác's mistake on Pedro Neto's cross, finding the net to secure a 2-1 victory for Portugal in their Euro 2024 opener.
