Rayo Vallecano responded early in the second half. Just four minutes after the restart, Álvaro García headed the ball back into the area and De Frutos struck first time to level the score. The equalizer reopened the contest, with Real Madrid pushing forward and the visitors looking to counter.
At the 23-minute mark, Kylian Mbappé came close to restoring Real’s lead but saw his effort crash against the crossbar after rounding the goalkeeper. Late in the match, Rayo were reduced to ten men when Ciss received a red card for a heavy challenge on Ceballos.
With the numerical advantage, Real Madrid increased the pressure and eventually found the breakthrough. In the 52nd minute of stoppage time, Brahim Díaz was fouled inside the area, and the referee awarded a penalty. Mbappé converted confidently, sealing a dramatic 2–1 victory at the Bernabéu.
